Components are designed to provide the functionality required to update the status of the elements of the plant, to update historical records, to transform materials, to update orders and so on. Therefore every component is specialized in performing some specific actions. As an example the component for handling materials provides functionality related to material management, such as Material Master Data definition (and/or import from an ERP System), including the Bills of Material. This component will also handle material transforms throughout the manufacturing operations, as in a food plant, where ingredients are mixed to obtain final products. It thus enables the possibility of building the entire genealogy of products.
This component is SIMATIC IT Material Manager and a similar approach is to other functionality such as Orders Management, Personnel Management, Product Definition Management, and KPIs calculations. Modeling a Production Operation (the workflow to handle a specific manufacturing operation) means to sequence the functionality exposed by different components, in order to achieve a certain manufacturing target. SIMATIC IT Components are engineered and fully harmonized inside the overall architecture and provide detailed functions for handling Manufacturing processes. A SIMATIC IT graphical representation with all the components is shown in the next figure (Fig. 8).
The combination of these components (and of their functions), guaranteed by SIMATIC IT Production Modeler, represents the solution provided by SIMATIC IT for MES applications.
